The Keto Diet and You

The keto diet is the latest diet to take the world by storm. What is keto exactly?

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that has everyone curious, and why not? They say you can eat all the bacon and butter you want with this diet. Sounds absurd? It does have its health benefits. It is said that it helps people with diabetes, cancer, and diabetes.

What is a ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet, or keto for short, is a type of diet wherein you remove carbohydrates and replace them with fat in your diet. This puts you in a metabolic state called ketosis.

Since your body is missing of carbs, it gets its energy from the stored fats. Fats are also turned into ketones in the liver, which is beneficial to the brain as it gets supplied with the energy it needs. This switch to burning fat instead of carbohydrates is what we call ketosis.

What can you eat when you are in keto diet?

The good news is that you can eat fatty foods like eggs, chocolates, meat and poultry, seafood, cheese, avocados, eggs, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts and seeds, butter, and cream. Sounds good!

What can’t you eat?

You should avoid bread, low-fat dairy products, beans, grains like rice, oatmeal, and pasta, drinks high in sugar, peanuts, and junk food.

Some of us cannot live without these foods, but you will get used to not having them after a while.

Keto flu

As your body tries to adjust to changes in your diet, you may experience what experts call the “keto flu”. Symptoms of keto flu are the same as the flu. This happens due to the extreme reduction in carbs. This is normal, and there are ways you can do to reduce its effects.

Reducing the effects of keto flu

Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water to help in reducing symptoms.

Eat enough fat. Fats can reduce your cravings for sweets

Getting enough sleep also helps. If you are having problems sleeping, here is what you can do;

  1. The bedroom should only be a place for sleeping. Reading, watching television, working, and using your cellphone should be done elsewhere.
  2. Take a warm bath. This signals to your body that it is time to relax.
  3. Take away ambient light. Make your bedroom as dark as possible.
  4. Power naps should be done early in the afternoon. Naps after 3 PM will affect your sleeping pattern.

With that said, ketogenic diet is not for the faint of heart, so to speak. Before you embark in this journey, make sure you will stay committed.

I do not really recommend ketogenic diet. It may not be sustainable in the long run. You may want to try it though. Everyone reacts differently to certain diets, and you can check if this one is for you.
